the name is really "little blue heron"
they are a dark, inky, almost purple-blue heron, and even as adult birds, called "little blue herons"....:)

excellent job with this, Terri. My eyes almost popped out of my skull when i viewed this in full size. the bright (but not excessively so) grass as a setting for this deeply colored and clearly focused bird...is a winnner! kudos!

Never had one of these in UK. Nearest was in the Azores. Nicely composed shot Terri and you've captured a lot of good detail for a dark subject.
Was this taken recently as it looks to be in it's winter plumage? In summer they are slightly paler, with neck plumes and what's weird, the juveniles are white!
