Church with a Red? Door

On a bright blue day about two weeks ago before our Nor'easter hit...

{EDIT} These doors REALLY are red. I did no post work on them. The question mark in my title was to signify my puzzlement at why a religious establishment would paint their doors red, as it has other connotations in society here. I love Photoshop, as everyone knows, but I swear on a stack of Bibles, I did not paint these elements in.)

It's interesting to see a church with such a bright color for the doors. It looks so perfect and well constructed and the colors of your framing go so well here. That's one gorgeous sky too!

I wonder if they painted the door red to bring it to the attention of anyone thinking of going in - this is the way! lol! All the churches in the UK are either ancient buildings or very sedate looking buildings from the outside and not as inviting as this one! lovely capture!

Unusual to see this thing...as fogz above says...our churches have big lumbering solid wood doors!...this is because, in olden times...the church was a fortified sanctuary!

Well, I read thru all the answers and I didn't see where one person mentioned the real reason for the color red, at least from a Biblical standpoint. It represents the blood of Christ, without the shedding of which there would be NO forgiveness of our sins!

A most pleasing capture. Well presented, focused and exposure perfect.

Most likely this is a parish of the Episcopal Church. At least in the US, it is common to see the main entrance to the church building painted a brilliant red. When our parish outgrew its older building and relocated to a larger one; one of the first things done was to paint the main doors.

Perhaps it's "an Anglican thing"? Great picture! j

03/20/08 5:28 PM GMT
I happen to know why the doors are red. Most Episcopal churches have red doors. On the FAQ on the website for the national body, this explanation is available: Why do so many Episcopal Churches have red doors?

Legend says that red doors traditionally mean “sanctuary” – the ground beyond the doors is holy, and anyone who goes through them is safe from physical (and spiritual) harm. In ancient times, no one could pursue an enemy past red doors into a church, and certainly no one could be harmed or captured inside of a church. Today, the red reminds us of the blood of Christ and that we are always safe in God’s care!

See http://www.episcopalchurch.org/87753_ENG_HTM.htm# for the FAQ answer, and http://www.episcopalchurch.org for the main site.

Hope this info helps!
