Well Tigs the colorization kinda looks straightforward but it's not.
In this time period people wanted a light to white complexion if look
at the original you can see all lines and bags under the eyes have
been done with makeup (you can see above the eyes some dark lines no makeup)to get a smooth white face. Huuummm....the dilemma do I colorize the painted face or give him his real face choose for the first am thinking about giving him his real face without the makeup but whats then real choices choices choices.....

William Morris Stewart (1827-1909) was a lawyer and Republican Senator from Nevada who was very active in western policy and litigation, from Nevada to California. One of many portraits of influential "movers and shakers" of the time by photographer Charles Milton Bell.

I think the wrinkles and bags belie a lifetime of endeavor and experience, and even on an old doof like me can look distinguishing... until I smile my "vampire" smile of gap-toothed goofiness. Hmmm... perhaps that's why we seldom see toothy smiles in any of these old portraits of old people? Are they hoping to look distinguished or are they are dentally challenged?

Rob, when I looked at the original, I only saw a man of authority. After the excellent, not over-dosed, and not unnatural way of editing and colorization, I also saw more human traits; a kind of strict father figure now. This is your merit, my friend!

I'm always a little leery of these bearded fossils and judging their portraits on zero information. Such is the case for congressman W.M. Stewart of Nevada. He appears to be an apologist and stooge for the southern states immediately following the Civil war. As early as 1866, only one year after the end of the war, he submitted to Congress a resolution to restore property and Congressional representation to the southern states without penalty. It's not difficult to argue that by not punishing the south for it's treason against the Union, all the racism and bigotry embodied in the Confederacy was left to fester and poison the country following Reconstruction. Some boils need to be lanced.

Thanks Rob. And thanks for your generosity with the creds. Your karma is becoming legendary. Some far off day, paleokarmatologists from the distant future will sift the sediment of our civilization and go wow, that dude was chill.

And regarding portraits of these hair farmers, back then having lots of facial hair was an overt sign of wealth and power. Or insanity. I can roll with both.
