A well dressed and well groomed man with a very sharp and alert pair of eyes - I would not like to cross him.
As always you brought him to like with your superb colourization.
JBT Tupper had a book published in 1862 called "Civil War Memories"
Electronic version is here https://openlibrary.org/books/OL14000599M/Civil_war_memories.

I wonder if Earl Tupper of Tupperware fame was a descendant of his :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Rob, after checking-out this link, one can view photographs/illustrations taken/made in that era and one can read letters that James B. T. Tupper has written to his parents, his sisters Louisa, Augusta, and Libbie and to his brother (don't know his name however).
In cooperation with the by the by you perfectly colorized image it reveals to me 'the person' behind mr. Tupper. Makes to my humble opinion this time document complete. Excellent work again, my friend!

LE, SEA and you have done the research for us Rob. Prof. Knik hasn't signed it yet, so I will have to come back and read what he adds to the discussion.
I will just say the only way you could have made him look better, would have been to add some hair to a shiny head. Not that I think bald is a bad look.
Great work.

It appears that my zeal for leaving researched comments on your submissions, Rob, is having a limited effect on a few other regulars. What I found about him is from a similar source as the one Cornelius cites, plus several others. James Brainerd Taylor Tupper was born in East Long Meadow, in western Massachusetts. As a member of the class of 1861 (just weeks before the start of the Civil War), he graduated from Williams College, Williamstown (far northwestern corner of the state), with a law degree. Shortly after graduation he served with the 31st Massachusetts regiment and, on May 1, 1862, under the command of General Benjamin Franklin Butler, participated in the capture and occupation of New Orleans, LA. The reviled Butler was nicknamed "Beast Butler", and "Spoons", for his alleged habit of pilfering the silverware of Southern homes in which he stayed. Sometime after the war James met and married Susan J. Alden and moved to Washington, D.C. Before becoming Chief of the Law Division of the Internal Revenue Bureau there (which eventually became Criminal Investigation (CI), investigating potential criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code) he was chief of the Sugar Bounty Division (for which I have no explanation) and chief of the tobacco division of the Internal Revenue Bureau (now Service). During his years in Washington he was also a member of the Society of Colonial Wars (founded for the purpose of furthering the interest in, and study of, America's Colonial history between May, 1607, and April, 1775), the Cosmos Club (a private social club for men and women distinguished in science, literature and the arts or public service), and was on the Board of Children's Guardians (acting as legal guardians for the neglected, abused, abandoned, or destitute children committed to them by the judges of the police and criminal courts of the District of Columbia). Tupper retired in early 1919 and, with his wife, Sarah, moved to Orlando, Florida, where "he went to seek health". The following year, at a dignified age 81, he died from whatever that health concern was, his obit stating only that "death claimed" him.

Okay, Tick, you want to give Les a nudge... he's snoring again.

Sounds like JBT had his hands in a lot of things, including people's silverware drawer. Great research once again Prof Knik and a wonderful compliment to Restoration Rob's (RR) work.

No, Tick, it was Tupper's General Butler who was the thief. He was also so abusive to the citizens of New Orleans and his own soldiers that his occupation of the city was cut short, replaced by public demand.
