Girdwood is about 40 miles from Anchorage and is a great destination year-round. I was there in late summer and took the tram to the top. Lots of people were riding bicycles down the trails, paragliding down the mountain, or just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. A couple even got married on top of the mountain and needed witnesses for the event as they only brought the minister and a ukulele player for the music.

If you've ever wanted to make a difference but found it hard to believe that one person could... check out the Kiva Team Caedes discussion thread and discover that anything is possible.
Breathtaking environment for hang gliding, Ted. See however that hang gliding there isn't without risk because of the near presence of ski lift cables attached to masts, so I would prefer to relax and enjoy the scene there.
