My friend Ruby, has this little lily pond sitting next to her patio. This is the same lady that has the wildflower garden.

Thank you for your comments.

Sandi, Ruby doesn't have only a 'green thumb, but a wet one as well, lol.

Beautiful capture, the water lily and the water lily pads 'encased' in black', create a very special effect.

As others have pointed out, the black water really make the lily pads pop. Fantastico, Sandi.

Love the water lily. I do like that your composition's background is black - it really makes everything "pop." Nice job, Tigs.

I had an ornamental pond off the patio back when I was still married. I loved building it and sitting there looking at it. That was long before I was into photography. Your shot here really brings back the memories. I love the focus on the water lily. Beautifully taken and presented, Sandi.

Since the day I learned to swim I have been leery of black or very dark water. My brother, seven years my senior had built a raft on an abandoned u-pond, left behind in deep woods when a new flood-control channel was cut in a local river. He paddled several of us (including our dog Susie, who quickly jumped in the water and paddled back to shore) out into the middle. Realizing I didn't know how to swim he threw me in, told me to use susie's swimming technique, and paddled back, not looking back once. I made it, obviously, but not before ingesting plenty of the dark, motionless water. I was 5. So I am leery of dark water but here it makes such a terrific contrast with the bright green pads and the pink lilly. I think you should try a version using just the bottom right area, cropped tight the way your patio impatiens photo is done, with the lilly off-center.
