Image upload changes

Submitted by caedes 09/08/13 8:22 PM GMT

Yesterday I made some changes to the way image uploads are handled. The new system will accept your image immediately, but it will not process the image (make the thumbnail and preview sizes) for a few minutes. This is designed to reduce the load on the server (because resizing large images takes a lot of computation). After a few minutes, the server will create two smaller sizes of your image and upload them to the "cloud" (Amazon web services). By using the cloud we will not have to worry about running out of storage space on the image server as we have had to in the past.

The second change is related to the viewing of images. I decided against automatically creating a lot of different sizes of each image because it is wasteful on storage space. Instead, you just click on the image preview and you get the full-size image (resized to fit your screen). You can then right-click to save it and you'll always get the original sized image as it was uploaded.

We will be making some other changes to further streamline the upload and image viewing process. In particular, I want to immediately forward you to the image display page when you upload an image (as it previously worked).

There might be a glitch you need to know of. rvdb has been having problems uploading his images. Says they won't upload, their not being rejected. I know he has been trying to post, but they never show up. I also noticed that when I try to click on his gallery nothing shows up. I have to go to the wallpaper search and type in his name and then I find his gallery. ????? I hope this can be fixed soon, he is so talented, and really brings some unique and artistic imagery to Caedes. Thank you. Tigs♥ =^..^=

Sandi, I can go to New Images and find Rob's (.rvdb) last upload
Trash Art 0225 uploaded 2 days ago. Clicking on it takes me straight to the image page and from there his full gallery.

My last image upload which has been approved and is in my gallery does not appear under Subscriptions in my job list though, even though it has several comments. Perhaps this is by design (?) because it is in my 'Upload Status' list.

As of this morning 09.00 UK time...

Although I have had notice of friends who have commented on my 'older' posts ..

I have had no notice of subscription/comments by friends (In the 'Jobs' section)on my 'New' images posted!..The only way I can check on Comments is by either going to my own gallery or the 'New images' section!

Also haven't had any notice of postings by friends!

Can you let us know if this will still be available?..

Appreciated!

I think that some of the problem for Rob (rvdb) is that he uploads in a larger format, he did manage to post a pic. of two swans. He is going to try something different in his next upload.

I had a PM from Caedes yesterday regarding uplpoad size - apparently it's not just pixel size but also MB size(file size) that's also been changed. Here is what he said: "Personal message from caedes [ 09/8/13 16:10 ]:
I think the image was rejected because the file size was too large not because of the image dimensions. It is currently set at 10MB maximum, but I will increase it a bit more." If you use a PNG format that is recommended, file size will likely be too large as most of mine are around 12-14 MB. I was able to load one at 3100 pixels when I converted it to a JPEG format.

You can also go the wallpaper search and type in their name and go to their gallery. I think the glitch seems to be over with, but this is a way to get caught back up, and view those postings that were involved with the glitch. In the past here at Caedes those arrows worked like they do for every other site, the left-facing arrow returning me to the previous window. Not so for Caedes now, however; if I'm typing a comment and click on the image to see it larger, then click on the previous-screen arrow to return me to my comment, it doesn't return me to my comment as it always did in the past... it returns me to the screen prior to my comment and it's like I never made a comment at all (did I use the word comment enough here? Leave a comment on my comment if you don't think I commented properly.). This happens at more than just my home computer. It happens no matter what computer or tablet I use. -Nik
