Depicted is the historical 'Sashuis'. It's called so because it's a former guardian house guarding the lock on the canal leading to the former port of Bruges ('lock' is in the Dutch language a 'sas' or 'sluis') (See 'PS 1'). The 'Sashuis' was built in 1519, some mechanisms have been preserved, which were used to regulate the water level until 1970. On the right one can see the small castle 'Minnewater' (see 'PS 2'). For a more detailed photograph of this castle, please check-out THIS LINK

PS 1: in this part of Belgium the Dutch language is spoken.

PS 2: the former (medieval) port of Bruges is now a small lake, called 'Minnewater', hence the name of the castle.

All of your Bruges series have been so impressive Mr. C. and this follows that same pattern - that light post in front gives the viewer a good perspective.

Having been in construction for much of my life, as well as an artist, from the street to the lamppost, fence and the lock house, I counted 21 individual, highly detailed, architectural embellishments that really separate the olde world from the new. Simply amazing.

I like the period construction. Having the light and people give it scale. Very sharp and the lighting is good.
