The 'Grote Markt' (Big or tall market place) has been the central square of the center of Mechelen for centuries. It's dominated by the Saint Rumbold's Cathedral, the interior of which I have shown you with this photograph. On the other side is the City Hall (not visible on this capture however).

Historic buildings dating from different times and built in various styles, including the 16th-century Renaissance and the Rococo from the 18th century, are situated around the 'Grote Markt'.

The 'Grote Markt' has been closed to traffic since 2004 and now there is an underground car parking lot.

During its construction, archaeologists found an old cesspool and a road from the 13th century. There were already market stalls along this road then.

There's still a lively market here every Saturday.

You must be doing postcards now. This is an excellent photo for visitors to want to travel to this location. Not many buildings these days would match the old churches and shops.

So many levels of history, and different periods of architecture, all in one place. . . I*m not sure if I could leave this place until I had seen everything there was to see and experience. In fact I suspect I would need a visa to accomplish it. America*s Anglo history goes back only 400 years, and the Native American history many thousands of years (however, their physical recording of events, called *winter counts*, go back only 150 years), both with limited physical reminders (as opposed to what we see in your fantastic Mechelen series). As a relative newcomer on the historical platform, it takes a bit to wrap my head around what I see in photographs like yours, C. It should suffice to say that I am fully impressed by the subject and in love with how you present them. Kudos (with a capital KUDOS)!
