Is Critique Dead? purmusic 10/25/08 12:10 AM GMT I can't take credit for what is to follow below this preamble: I created this thread in response to some rumblings as of late. Forgive me the use of that word ... 'rumblings' in particular, that is. For some it goes deeper than that. And for some ... there is an unawareness of the current state of affairs. Consider this then, a Caedesian public servic.. ... no, strike that ... this is not an official statement or release from the administrative side. Critique Team? Canuck_Photo_Guy 11/08/06 3:38 AM GMT Further to the discussion in here What would be the process to having a little button to click to have your image critiqued by a critiquing team (could be made up of existing senate members or perhaps caedes users with the technical knowledge to offer such critiques)? Are comments too nice... michaeloneill 03/20/08 6:37 PM GMT I find that most users dont give constructive comments. Its my opinion that a lot of people are TOO NICE and dont want to offend when commenting. It almost seems like the comments just run around in a whirl of lovelyness and are not realistic at all. Not to say that ALL comments are like that. Some of the the users give really well informed and honest feedback. The majority of them just dont have any point though. Maintaining Quality caedes 01/08/08 9:53 PM GMT I have to admit that of all the challenges that caedes.net has faced, maintaining a quality inventory of images is the most difficult. Originally, I would only post an image to the site once it had been on my own desktop for a while. This worked well to keep the quality high (at least from my perspective), but it certainly limited the number of images that would go on the site. You may ask "why do we need a set of 'permanent' images?" The truth is that the majority of the site's visitors c http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1920496

There is another more lengthy page with invaluable information called “This just in ... from the Constructive Critiquing Bureau ...” (thank you Lori for finding the link for me) which makes worthwhile reading. There are other posts also which may find themselves linked to from here later, according to relevance and usefulness to the intent of this post. C-Index Ramad 01/05/12 11:11 PM GMT I have been a regular (meaning continuous without long breaks in between) user/member of Caedes now for over 5 years. Caedes has provided me with a wonderful hobby for which I am very grateful. The C-Index was always a helpful scale for me (even if it was at times unfair) to judge the quality of my images. Now I am actually at a loss with no-one and no scale to tell me how good or bad my images are. My own well meaning friends - bless them - will always tell me how nice the images are but real c http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=3528185
C-index system again corngrowth 06/20/10 7:26 PM GMT I'm not that mad! On the one hand great comments for an image (thanks, my friends), but on the other hand a C-index of only 32 by now, for the same image, forces me to consider seriously whether I should quit with Caedes or not. To me it's really a, hard to understand, hypocrite situation. It seems to be that this voting system has become more and more a lottery, everything is possible from surprising good scores on the one hand to very disappointing results on the other hand for even good ph http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=3028079

What is wrong? ekowalska 09/24/07 7:06 PM GMT Every now and then it happens we upload some less successful photo to this site. I would like to start a new thread where we present one of our worse uploads (low c-index, works that never advanced to the permanent gallery) asking for crtiques. It is more and more difficult to get some decent comment on the shortcomings of our photos. I feel people are afraid to express what they truly think once they watch our works. He knows I post here and is aware of the site but I still prodded him by saying "you should have a look around for some wallpapers." His reply was interesting. Concern with Top Commenting concept ladyprariefire 06/29/06 9:35 AM GMT LET ME STATE THAT THIS FORUM IS NOT MEANT TO ATTACK OR BE AIMED AT ANY ONE PERSON. THIS IS MY GENERAL OPINION, I DON"T HAVE ANY ONE PERSON OR PERSONS IN MIND WHEN VOICING IT!! I've been really thinking about how hard it is to give a good well rounded critique to people's work. It takes a lot time for the average person to give that honestly. The top commentors chart isn't necissarily bad in itself, but I don't like the Caedes Cadre Prize concept for top commenting members. Knee-jerk reaction? third_eye 08/07/08 1:56 AM GMT There's a pattern or perhaps a trend I've noticed in the comments left at images posted here. Negative Comments vs. Positive Critique RobNevin 02/24/05 12:58 AM GMT There has been a reasonable discussion in another thread entitled "Afraid to Give Negative Comments" somewhat related to this posting. In this thread, which can be as short as the energy on the topic, I pose the simple question: • Is there a difference between a Negative Comment and a Positive Critique? From photosig.com FAQs: "Some people think they don't know enough about photography to write critiques. This isn't true. lack of constructive criticism vlad421 05/30/08 8:51 PM GMT Aloha, I have noticed that most people do not proide any constructive criticism on images. I try to provide some form of constructive criticism on a lot of pictures that I see that aren't quite perfect. Micro Critique philcUK 12/17/07 8:10 PM GMT I know it has probably always been a problem, but there seems to be an ever increasing trend for people to comment, often in a purportedly considered fashion, on images – without actually ever opening the full size image to inspect it – making a mockery of much of the praise and technical evaluation they have lavished on it. You know the kind of thing – lots of comments like ‘great focus/sharpness/DOF/detail etc etc ‘ and then you open the full size image and think ‘what the hell?’ followed swif http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1889102

Critique Level animaniactoo 12/03/06 2:48 PM GMT It's been mentioned by many (including myself) that people do not leave comments pointing out flaws or suggesting improvements because they are afraid of hurting someone's feelings or have had poor response to having been honest in the past (flaming pm's etc.). "Feedback/critique" contest Samatar 02/02/13 4:14 AM GMT I had this idea to try and stimulate some more critique activity on the site; basically, instead of entering images, you would provide links to good examples of feedback left on someones image (either your own feedback, or one left by someone else). Linking Yes or No votes in the CAC to commenting on the photo you vote on. No comment, no vote registered. Is there any way (Software wise.) to make it mandatory for someone voting on a nominated image to make a comment on the photo? Just a thought. Elimination of C-index Petition June 01/11/05 8:04 PM GMT Elimination of C-index yes or no! The images should be scored according to Artistic Merit. Let us start up a petition to make changes to the c-index.! Many of us have been conditioned through schooling that we tend to get a little sensitive with regards to the c-index as a reflection of the quality of our work as viewed by others. So, any comments and critiques would be greatly appreciated! http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1614710
No critical comments? Ramad 05/11/07 9:45 PM GMT Whatever happened to constructive, informative and objective criticism? Most comments I see are "wow" "great" etc. etc. This may irritate some people and probably has been discussed before, I don't know. I am just as guilty because when I see such praises before my entry I feel reluctant to point out even an obvious fault/error in the posting. We are not renowned artists - mostly just amateur photographers - and with negative or positive (but truthful) comments we can only help to improve one http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1527469

Not Doing Reviews Correctly soulspin 03/26/06 1:28 AM GMT Hi, I didn't see a better forum here to post this. I've been a Caedes member since 9/10/04. I've never "critiqued" any work I've seen here. I really enjoy coming here and looking at the beautiful pieces and artwork. When I see something I really like I make general comments that I now see do not follow the "Giving an Image Review Guidelines". I went to this page because I saw that I have a "job" to comment on a photo. It states "You have to prove that your perspective is worth considering http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=716275
Should we be nice? DigitalFX 08/30/05 1:07 AM GMT I know this topic has been discussed before. I have a slightly different approach. I'm a nice person, and I think that nice comments are nice. BUT, I think most of us have honest opinions that we keep to ourselves and it makes me look bad because I try to give honest and helpful comments to our folks. When everybody is saying WOW what and awesome picture" and I'm saying"Well, it's a lovely compositiong, but you could improve it by messing with levels in Photoshop if you have it." great comments/ lousy score third_eye 04/22/07 2:09 AM GMT Ok, I've given up on trying to figure out what images get what scores, and no, a vote (high or low) doesn't determine (in my eyes) the quality of an image. I opened this image's page, and saw a score in the high40's. ok, fine. but the comments left don't match the score received. So, does this stink, and I'm just getting placated, or is someone trashing me(again) in the VB? I know this topic has, by now, the same effect as fingernails on a blackboard. I'm a supporter of the site, and think it ha http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1494856
putting my work where my words are third_eye 01/28/07 5:06 PM GMT ok, substitute "work" for money, and "words" for mouth and you'll perhaps get what I mean. Here's what I propose: A voluntary exemption from theVB and an automatic archiving of all of one's work. this way, silly numbers truly become irrelevant. anyone wanting to see a person's work, simply has to look for it,and there it'll be. and yes, i'll go first. I grow weary of the pettiness. in all honestly,i would've left already if i didnt think i'd miss the people here, and the work they put out. and no http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1350512
B&W Critique Request Canuck_Photo_Guy 11/21/06 4:06 AM GMT I was wondering if I could have some critiques on Tired Place to Rest a Weary Head. I thought that this would be a fantastic background, but judging from the c-index (which as we all know is not the best indicator anyways) some feel it's not so good. I was wondering what your thoughts would be on this image pertaining to how I could improve upon it. Thanks for your time and effort in replying! http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1221344

That's like saying it completely sucks. What the heck? I got such nice comments but such a lousy c-index? I can't believe that people here hate fractals that much that they'd all give me a 0 or a 1! Sheesh. At least give me some feedback and tell me WHY you voted that low. I mean, it really hurts when 11 people essentially say your picture sucks and won't tell you why. http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=848441

Feedback on Possible Policy Change caedes 11/05/04 11:35 PM GMT I would like some feedback on a possible policy change that the mods and I have been thinking about. comments-- TOO nice? reddawg151 02/10/04 5:30 AM GMT lately i felt like a lot of comments have been too nice. hats off to everyone who takes time to look at images and comment, that is what makes this site so great. and also because the people are very nice, very cool. but it's also about improving as artists and getting feedback. in the last few weeks there has been a lot of "good job, keep it up, one of my faves, 10/10" and nothing else. at the best there is a "nice colors" added in. but never any critique. even on images that truly aren't that http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=69127
What to put in the FAQs? caedes 11/08/03 10:35 PM GMT I'm making a FAQs for the site and I'd like to use this thread to gather a list of frequently asked questions that have showed up in the discussion board. Please list any questions that you think have come up more than once or which are common among new visitors to the site. I already tried going through all the old discussion board topics, but that was way too difficult. Thanks. http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=29543

C:index cynlee 07/02/08 1:28 PM GMT I know we've been here before, but why can't we just get rid of it (C:index) or replace it with something better? It just irritates everyone because very little thought seems to be put into it these days. I'm not speaking only of my posts, but there are some really fine images on here that are being 'tanked' and they really don't deserve to be. Post Process Another's Photo noahnott 04/05/08 12:16 AM GMT Bad title; it can always be changed. But for this thread, you can: 1) Post your own image that you want to see other people post process (eg: 'photoshop'). Make sure it is not an image that has already been post processed. For example, link to RAW files (hosted on a separate site) or 'untouched' JPGs/PNGs. Resizing is allowed to save space on whatever site you upload your 'unfinished' photo to. 2) Post process (edit, photoshop, or whatever you like to call it) another's photo. Voting hiker 05/02/06 2:18 PM GMT Can someone clarify this for me?? It seems that selective voting has been disabled, yet the option to vote on specific images of your chosing still appears. When you attempt to vote though, you are redirected to the page showing the (formerly 2) voting options. Low c-index scores Homtail 09/13/09 1:53 PM GMT Ive recently been posting a lot of images i took from my holiday in Rome and have been surprised by the very low c-index scores they have achieved. I know im not by any means a good photographer but the comments i have recieved have been very complimentary and the average c-score i am recieving is averaging at a 4 or less and so do not reflect the comments. I know that i shouldnt put too much emphasis on the c-index but the above situation is confusing and not helping me improve as a photographe http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=2750176
Voting Booth abuse verenabloo 04/19/09 4:25 AM GMT Someone made a comment to me, and I agree very much with it. Since we are having to vote for ten images before we post a photo on caedes, it is obvious that people are getting the voting over and done with. This is evidently to put any number down without even thinking about it, but just to get 'it over with' so they can post their own creations. It's a shame that's happening, but it's very apparent. There are some gorgeous things posted with very low numbers and some very "slack" things posted w http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=2585864
Ability to Upload a rework to illustrate Critique requests . snapshooter87 12/27/08 11:59 PM GMT It would be very useful and constructive to be able to add a quick rework along with constructive comments, or at least in the Personal Message function. WIP Forum ? LynEve 09/05/08 12:24 AM GMT I have copied and pasted this from another Discussion where it has gone unremarked upon. I have had a couple of favourable private responses to the idea. Would there be a possibility of having a section specifically for 'works in progress' where those of us who wish to improve our skills and are not afraid of critisism could temporarily upload images for advice and opinions before uploading the final effort ? Something's Not Right legster69 06/09/07 2:32 PM GMT Am I the only one who feels as if the voting system on here is not anywhere near a true voting system? I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how some of the photos I post score so low and others that are similar, or not even as good, score so high. I am really starting to think that it would be a good idea to have people choose categories they would like to vote on and submit votes only for things they can relate to and give a good, honest evaluation. Learning Forum regmar 06/30/05 1:27 PM GMT As the site has grown in membership I've noticed a problem that my communications with a friend has brought to light. Photographers who are learning seem to be afraid to post on the site out of fear that they can't live up to the level of such titans as Pierre, Lucy, Daryll, Sam, Josh, etc. I feel that this is going to drive some people with real potential off the site, and limit its growth. Aside from this I feel that Caedes inclusivity is what drew me here when I started out, and I hate to http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=419454
Reward systems Romane 03/05/05 11:50 AM GMT Good morning During a most interesting discussion on the quality of images, the use of reward systems was brought up. A request was made that I post my thoughts on this in a separate thread. I work on the principle that once an idea has been voiced, it is no longer the property of the person who spoke but the property of everyone, free to be dissected, analysed, broken apart and reassembled in another form if needed. So feel free. To get the full context, just pop over to "The Old Classics". T http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=330676

Is it time to retire the c-index? J_E_F 05/16/11 10:17 PM GMT When I first got into Caedes, I was intrigued by the c-index system. It was a numerical quantifier to comments and critiques. So I had this strange notion that as I tried to improve my photographic skills, based upon comments, that images would be more polished and presentable, appealing to the compositional aspirations of a desktop picture resource. Then logically, the c-index ratings would improve too.But the c-index system seems to have a mind of its own.And with the ability to now see exactly http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=3364306

Voting Zero Mythmaker 10/23/10 6:05 AM GMT I was recently surprised to see a comment somewhere on Caedes that the person writing would "never" give a zero in the vb. I was surprised because such a stance had never occurred to me and it got me thinking about the issue. The foundation point for my reasoning on this issue is that every image in the VB is there voluntarily, it's possible to post your photos here without submitting them to the VB so anyone who does submit to the VB has made a choice to get voting feedback.I have seen in the VB http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=3211100
