Downloaded? Really? jwicker 01/28/05 2:13 AM GMT It seems if you click to see someones pics in the larger sizes....it gives them credit for a download....so the downloaded stats are kinda skewed......i looked at several bad pics in the larger sizes....(even though most pics on this site are very well done).....i didnt leave bad posts for these pics...(if you cant say anything nice :) ) but the pic still gets credit for a downlaod? Am I wrong on this thinking? http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=306303
Vote before download sansoni7 09/01/04 6:44 PM GMT I had an idea. Everybody who put images on Caedes feel unhappy because people don´t vote on the image but made the download, so...they like it. I think people must vote before making the download and, perhaps votes will be more. What do you think of it? And Caedes Moderator what do you think of it ? I am waiting your opinions. Official: c-index re-normalization caedes 07/13/04 8:08 PM GMT In response to various design flaws in the system and sporatic abuse I've made some changes to the way the c-index is calculated. cindex/100=1+e^(-favorites/10)*((downloads/views+2*rating)/3-1) Where favorites has a maximum value of 10. This has the effect of making the number of favorites less important and weighing the rating (by voting) twice as much as the download to view ratio. http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=176906
Trivial things that wind you up philcUK 11/08/04 6:55 PM GMT #1. 'Secret' tracks at the end of music CD's that are normally completely superfluous, catch you off guard and leave you wandering if your stereo is bust during the innordinately long gap. #2. Computers telling you that YOU didnt shut down properly after THEY crashed for no apparent reason. #3. Domestic animal's sanitary habits. #4. C-Index Troubles Radjehuty 09/01/04 6:37 PM GMT I don't know about you, but I am starting to think that there is a real problem with the C-Index, and I am not blaming the formula...Math doesn't lie :) I was thinking that maybe there are people just voting 0 just for kicks or something. I have seen a lot of images that are obviously good, but have rediculously low C-Indexes. I've even seen a work of Tracy's work that is a 69, but won 2nd place in a contest. What do you think could be the problem? I have seen a lot of accounts with 0 Karma http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=216210
Is it time to retire the c-index? J_E_F 05/16/11 10:17 PM GMT When I first got into Caedes, I was intrigued by the c-index system. It was a numerical quantifier to comments and critiques. So I had this strange notion that as I tried to improve my photographic skills, based upon comments, that images would be more polished and presentable, appealing to the compositional aspirations of a desktop picture resource. Then logically, the c-index ratings would improve too.But the c-index system seems to have a mind of its own.And with the ability to now see exactly http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=3364306
View Full Size vs. Download CurtieBear 02/24/07 7:11 AM GMT Just a thought here... What about disabling the ability to right clack an image to save it, and add an actual download button, whe you want to keep the image on your computer. On your images stats it could look something like - Views: 29 Full View: 19 Downloads: 5 (and if a fav count option is used) Faves: 15 http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1398693
TPBM Little_Art_Gurl 03/15/06 10:07 PM GMT TPBM means "The Person Below Me" You justify the above statement by the person above you by saying True or False, and then supplying a new statement. A download for all the pictures Andurion 08/16/06 2:47 AM GMT Well would it be possible to get the whole archive as a zip? Cause I love so many pictures here, and my internet isn't the fastest, it takes me forever to download a few, mainly because of I have to open so many pages. Caedes Ratings Bias noobguy 05/15/04 4:44 AM GMT I wanted to comment on the discussion white crocus from Johanna but has it no longer relates to the discussion between jon and joost I decided to put it in a separate thread. First of all I want to say that this site is great and so is everyone on it. As far as the rating system, it all depends on how you view it. At first I had problems with it as I did not agree with a lot of the ratings on some of my pictures and other people’s pictures. Does a photo automatically say download even if we didnt download it? verenabloo 01/26/06 11:53 PM GMT I am wondering about something. I just viewed a photo, then it gave me vote points, well, it happened to be a below average photo..but then when I clicked Vote...it said I viewed and downloaded it. I did not download it...it was not a clear photo for the desktop. So why does it come up as a download? I thought downloads mean the person put it on their hard drive or saved it into their files...I did neither. Can you explain please?Thanx http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=618754
ISP discussion Seebee0509 01/17/10 9:17 AM GMT I was just reading the comments on thepiratebay, when i saw a commenter claimed that his 90kbps is slow. But i've been worse. My fastest torrent download speed is 20kbps which rarely happens. The usual speed i get is 5kbps. Come to think of it, maybe my ISP sucks. I took the speedtest.net, download speed is 0.6mbps while upload speed is 0.2mbps. When i read the comments on demonoid, the commenters display their screenshot of speedtest. Shockingly, their download speed and upload speed is 12mbps http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=2884260
Downloads? Jay_Underwood 03/09/09 3:44 AM GMT So here's a "stupid" question that probably dosn't need a thread, but here it goes; When an image is "Downloaded", does this mean people are setting that image as their desktop? Or are they Saving the file onto their hard drive? Or could it be either? Since the c-index is down, this has become my new "go to" guide as to see how popular an image has become. ok, I will shut up now.. Thanks http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=2542893
Thinking about fairness of c-index... NzglKing 12/13/05 4:40 PM GMT I've been thinking about the fairness of the c-index system. according to the FAQs "The c-index is a number between zero and 100 that aims to give a rough idea of the quality of an image. The primary use of the c-index is to enable users to sort galleries in order to bring the best images to the top." Thinking about the system and how it works, i believe it actual may not be as fair as it should be. Allow me to explain: The c-index is based on the votes it gets (needing at least 5), views a http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=577274

Elimination of C-index Petition June 01/11/05 8:04 PM GMT Elimination of C-index yes or no! The images should be scored according to Artistic Merit. Let us start up a petition to make changes to the c-index.! Many of us have been conditioned through schooling that we tend to get a little sensitive with regards to the c-index as a reflection of the quality of our work as viewed by others. I think it would be more effective for us to vote and to perhaps select from a list of artistic values on each image. This will help all of us to improve on our wor http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=295335
Constructive Criticism CanoeGuru 07/20/04 4:03 AM GMT I can't help but notice that most of the comments offered on individuals imges don't offer much constructive criticism. It seems that most of the comments consist of simply "nice shot" or something similar. Not that I think we should be giving "negative" comments, but it would be nice to see some more substance to our comments. What do you think? I know when I'm on Caedes.net....I enjoy listening to online radio. Right at this moment I'm listening to "When I'm with you" by Sheriff. Beautiful song! Views and Downloads compared to C Index verenabloo 04/13/10 7:42 PM GMT I wanted to make a point of just how "useless" (IMHO) the C Index is in comparison to the much more important fact of this being a wallpaper site. That means people come thru here by the hundreds, look at what they want for their desktop, grab what they love, and then leave. Is Critique Dead? purmusic 10/25/08 12:10 AM GMT I can't take credit for what is to follow below this preamble: I created this thread in response to some rumblings as of late. Forgive me the use of that word ... 'rumblings' in particular, that is. For some it goes deeper than that. And for some ... there is an unawareness of the current state of affairs. People Who Don't Download Lithfo 12/22/05 11:57 AM GMT Why would someone see a picture in one of the galleries, say to themselves, "Gee, I like that. I'm sure it's mostly non-members that do this, but I don't understand the point. C-index and any other petty footnote aside, why? "I like this image!" - Voting Alternative - RobNevin 10/09/05 4:23 PM GMT *sigh* I don't really want to start up another thread on voting. That rag's been rung dry and the cost to the site has been great. This thread, however, is sufficiently close that it may just earn me a 48 hour banning. The New Apophysis Released Today, 8/7/08 !!!! laurengary 07/27/08 4:33 PM GMT Hello fellow Apophysis-ians !!! Or whatever. ;oD Just to let you all know, I hear the next release of Apophysis, Apophysis 2.08, will be out on August 8th. Which means that your current Apophysis, 2.07 will time out then. Why they do this I don't know, personally I find it extremely irritating that they can't come up with another stable Apophysis like 2.02 but that's just me I guess. The thing I love about it...besides the suspense, cliffhangers and other things that keep me drooling for the next episode...is the artwork in it. For those of you who haven't seen the show, a character in it is an artist who paints the future...anyway the artwork is really cool...and reminds me of ...ahh crap, just had a brain fart, can't think of the artist's name...anyways...its very comic book looking. View to download average regmar 08/06/05 12:33 AM GMT I know you're busy as heck, Caedes, but the recent conversations about the ineffectuality of the c-index has led me to do some exploration and some thinking (Ouch!). I'd sure like some more effective tools for judging the quality of my work. On the Caedes Control Panel, if I could have a column called View to DL ratio (# of Downloads / # of Views) I would be happy. Likewise some overall artist totals like Total Downloads, Total Votes, Total Views, Overall View to Download ratio would be quite http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=449436
My Grievance for the Day oowenaas 05/08/05 4:31 PM GMT I suppose I deserve one, because I haven't griped on these boards before. It just bugs me when someone votes on one of my images without actually viewing it fullscreen. For example, I uploaded a picture this morning, and shortly after uploading it, it had 2 views and 2 downloads (1 of each being mine), but no votes. I come back a couple hours later to find it has 5 views, but still 2 downloads -- only now 2 members have voted on it. C-Index Issues Radjehuty 08/20/04 1:16 PM GMT I am really confused about these C-Index's One of my images was a 91:100, and today it jumped DOWN to a 82:100 Another went from 89 to 87, and one of them went from a 78 to an 84 which I thought was not a very good pic compared to the others. C:index cynlee 07/02/08 1:28 PM GMT I know we've been here before, but why can't we just get rid of it (C:index) or replace it with something better? It just irritates everyone because very little thought seems to be put into it these days. I'm not speaking only of my posts, but there are some really fine images on here that are being 'tanked' and they really don't deserve to be. Maintaining Quality caedes 01/08/08 9:53 PM GMT I have to admit that of all the challenges that caedes.net has faced, maintaining a quality inventory of images is the most difficult. Originally, I would only post an image to the site once it had been on my own desktop for a while. This worked well to keep the quality high (at least from my perspective), but it certainly limited the number of images that would go on the site. You may ask "why do we need a set of 'permanent' images?" The truth is that the majority of the site's visitors c http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=1920496

great comments/ lousy score third_eye 04/22/07 2:09 AM GMT Ok, I've given up on trying to figure out what images get what scores, and no, a vote (high or low) doesn't determine (in my eyes) the quality of an image. I opened this image's page, and saw a score in the high40's. ok, fine. but the comments left don't match the score received. So, does this stink, and I'm just getting placated, or is someone trashing me(again) in the VB? I know this topic has, by now, the same effect as fingernails on a blackboard. Main Gallery Nominations? WENPEDER 03/16/06 12:54 AM GMT As I was perusing "old 'new images," an idea came to me. Currently members rate images in the voting both and also have the opportunity to rate them selectively on the image pages. Yet, from what I've gleaned from discussions to date, neither the c-index or selective votes determine whether images are placed in the main "permanent" galleries. As we've all seen, some images with relatively low c-indexes have made the transition, while some images with relatively high c-indexes have not. Some Images Don't Download regmar 02/09/06 4:05 PM GMT I don't know if I'm alone in this problem, but several times each day I click on a thumbnail image (usually in the "New Images" gallery), and the page opens, all the information displays, but the image remains blank - no error, and the page says it has downloaded completely. Reward systems Romane 03/05/05 11:50 AM GMT Good morning During a most interesting discussion on the quality of images, the use of reward systems was brought up. A request was made that I post my thoughts on this in a separate thread. I work on the principle that once an idea has been voiced, it is no longer the property of the person who spoke but the property of everyone, free to be dissected, analysed, broken apart and reassembled in another form if needed. So feel free. To get the full context, just pop over to "The Old Classics". T http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=330676
FYI, slow jpeg downloads Accipiter 11/18/04 3:15 AM GMT I've always been impressed with how fast the jpegs load from Caedes.net Seems like you have fast servers, plenty of bandwidth and tight code on the site. However, FYI, tonight in here in Akron, Ohio USA, jpeg downloads have been slow to stalled completely. Navigation to galleries and all other funtctions seem to be happening at Caedes normal rapid pace, but I have repeatedly stalled out getting 800x600 or larger images to load. Chasing the Elusive 99 noobguy 09/01/04 3:50 AM GMT I thought it would be funny to post some scenarios to assist those who are chasing that elusive 99. I will post the 3 most important and assume that a 99 image is awesome enough to easily capture 10 or more favorites. "Wow, I must see this in full size!!!": This image just has to be seen in full size to get the details that the viewers are so intrigued by and has a 100% download to view ratio. It would require a user rating of 96% in order to achieve the elusive (true) 99. **FYI: Out of the 13 http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=215925
C-indexes are getting unpredictable noobguy 06/09/04 6:09 AM GMT I submitted a picture tonight and after the update it now as a c-index of 25 and it doesnt even have votes yet. I am assuming that is just because it gets points for whatever views and downloads it has and the c-index is unrealistic so far. But my photograph "wild flowers" had a c-index of 88 for its first day on, and now suddenly its a 99! Whats going on. Not to mention I've seen a few hundreds on the new server, never seen that before. Has the algorithm been tweaked a bit, or am I just dumb? http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=152573

The Dawn of a New Age Samatar 03/04/07 10:06 PM GMT With the old restraints which restricted uploads to wallpaper size now a thing of the past, does this represent a shift in what the site is about? Will it still remain a wallpaper site? Will you still be uploading the majority of your images in wallpaper format or do you see caedes as becoming simply a place to display art?? V-D / C-Index. purmusic 01/06/07 5:00 AM GMT This is an effort to approach some kind of middle ground. I have read most, not all of the discussions surrounding the C-Index ... and a number of times the number of views and downloads have been brought into the discussion. So ... How would everybody feel about incorporating those numbers for views/downloads ... and weighting it somehow to balance the inhouse scores? For example; 50% Views/Downloads ... 50% C-Index. View-to-download (VtD?) ratio statistic Quiet 08/11/06 2:04 PM GMT The RCI (for me, and for Rob) is consistently just C-index minus 3. Please Explain Distribution RUBrite 09/29/05 8:44 PM GMT Hi everyone. I love this website, but am totally confused by the new c-index distribution and score. I've looked at a number of images today and the numbers shown in the distribution simply do not conform to the distribution average shown - - most index scores being lower than the spread of scores would suggest. Would someone please explain how this number is calculated? Thanks. http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=505807
An idea to make voting and commenting a submit once deal. nmsmith 06/20/05 6:55 PM GMT A thought that might save time for people. I like to comment and vote on images that catch my eye enough to view fullsize. Why not have the voting be a series of radio buttons connected to the comment field? That way, we can comment, vote, and click submit just once - rather than the two step process we now go through. Those who want to vote, but not comment, can just click and submit. Those who wish to comment without voting can comment and submit. Works any of the three ways. http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Board::Topic&id=411589

The Old Classics Bromios 03/03/05 9:13 PM GMT I know this sounds ridiculously offensive, and it is not my intention to seem to be personally insulting, but I feel overall that there are now far fewer pictures which immediately catch my eye. Rant: Wheres the free stuff?? noobguy 10/08/04 12:41 AM GMT It seems like everything you find related to computers has to be payed for now. Its getting to be ridiculous. Free good software has become almost a foreign concept it seems. I remember not too long ago (please dont make me feel old) that programmers gave out most of their software for free and the only programs that you had to pay for were from the major software corporations, and people stuck to earning money with their JOBS. Webshots has some great Desktop photos but you can only download 5 Desktop pictures a day. If you wanted to download more then you have to pay for it. C-index system again corngrowth 06/20/10 7:26 PM GMT I'm not that mad! After all, I don't upload images just to see how many votes I can get! However, recently I have looked at a few of my submissions periodically to see how they fare.
