We used to have an Artist of the Month feature. But a month is soooooooooo long to wait to be recognized for al your outstanding work, right?

So, we've decided to implement an Image of the Week recognition to highlight the best work being posted right now. Here's how it works:

• A thread is posted in the Desktop, Wallpaper, Art, Etc. discussion forum every week for that week's eligible images.

• Eligible images are anything that has been uploaded from 12:00 am (0000 hours) Monday morning to Sunday evening 11:59 pm (2359 hours) EST time for the previous week.

• Nominations will be open from 12:00 am (0000 hours) Monday morning to Tuesday 8 pm (2000 hours) EST for the previous week's images.

• You can either post your nomination in the thread, or send it to +mimi, or +Piner in a pm. Each member has a maximum of 2 nominations every week.

• At about 10 am (1000 hours) EST time Wednesday morning, the thread will be updated to announce the selected image.

Remember to congratulate the winner before heading off to huddle with your favorite dessert, muttering dark imprecations and swearing to beat them out next week. ;)

I've written a new site feature that will allow us to easily ask for member feedback in order to (automatically) make decisions. This is very similar to the way the voting for the contests work, but this will allow us to vote on many other aspects of the site. The first test is for new images. When an image is uploaded, a number of "Image Approval" jobs will be sent to reputable members. If a certain number of the members agree that the new image is in compliance with the CoC, then it will automatically be upgraded to "active" status (visible in all galleries). A separate image approval job will be sent to the Senate members, but this will only be to cross-check the accuracy of the member decision. If you get one of these "Image Approval" jobs, you don't have to vote if you don't want to. The job will automatically delete after one hour or after enough other members vote.

Yesterday I made some changes to the way image uploads are handled. The new system will accept your image immediately, but it will not process the image (make the thumbnail and preview sizes) for a few minutes. This is designed to reduce the load on the server (because resizing large images takes a lot of computation). After a few minutes, the server will create two smaller sizes of your image and upload them to the "cloud" (Amazon web services). By using the cloud we will not have to worry about running out of storage space on the image server as we have had to in the past.

The second change is related to the viewing of images. I decided against automatically creating a lot of different sizes of each image because it is wasteful on storage space. Instead, you just click on the image preview and you get the full-size image (resized to fit your screen). You can then right-click to save it and you'll always get the original sized image as it was uploaded.

We will be making some other changes to further streamline the upload and image viewing process. In particular, I want to immediately forward you to the image display page when you upload an image (as it previously worked).

Things like the C-index (voting) can sometimes help in that effort, but sometimes they can distract us as well. Therefore, I have decided to remove the c-index and c-index voting from the site. Everyone is banned! - by caedes 06/11/11 7:11 PM GMT

Just kidding... We had a corruption of the user's database that caused the "am I banned" field to be set for everyone. This didn't immediately affect everyone at once because of caching in the system. This is why it took me a while to notice myself. I was able to fix it by deleting and reloading the user's database from a recent backup. No data was lost in the process unless you created an account in the last day (very few accounts). Sorry for freaking everyone out!

Art Council Changes - by caedes 02/13/11 3:34 AM GMT

Over the past month, 245 images have been nominated to the Art Council and 38% of those were approved by the Art Council. There have been about 100 voting Art Council members this month. In response to feedback that we've received and my analysis of the past voting patterns, I made a few changes:

1. Authors can no longer nominate their own images.
2. The number of voters per nominated image was increased from 15 to 19.
3. It is more likely for you to vote on images from galleries that you are interested in.
4. I tweaked the requirements for being a voting council member.

More about item three:

When an image is nominated to the Art Council, we now look at the general gallery it is in and assign at least half of the votes to council members who also have images in that gallery. For example, this should result in someone who is interested in fractals having more of a say of which images are promoted to the main fractal gallery.

We have recently made a change to the Code of Conduct in order to clarify a point concerning use of outside images and source attribution. The changes are on sections 2.a and 2.b. We have also made available to the moderators a tool which will make it very easy to search for elements of an uploaded image on the web. The bottom line is that you should be diligent in properly attributing source images for your uploads. These changes were made primarily to reinforce our commitment as a community to original artwork and to ensure the protection of the artistic rights of artists here and around the world.

Basically, we are adding further incentive for the Art Council members to be more critical and careful when nominating and (in particular) when voting on images to go in the main galleries. Art Council Changes - by caedes 08/25/10 9:52 PM GMT

You may have noticed that the "Art Council" button is back on some images. We are continuing the testing of the art council nomination process for images to be included in the Main Galleries (on the left-hand column). The main change from the previous test is that we are now recording nominations and art council votes. We will use this information for two purposes:

1. By default, you will only be able to nominate two images per week. If one or both of those images is confirmed by the Art Council (8 people have to vote "yes"), then you will be able to nominate another image. Otherwise, you will need to wait 1 week before you can nominate again. This should add an incentive to only nominate images that you really think should be confirmed by the Art Council.

2. We will be looking at the voting history in order to identify users who are fair and have a good track record of voting 'yes' on quality images and 'no' on sub-standard ones. Over time, Art Council members who vote unfairly or inconsistently will be replaced by new members.

We will continue to refine this process as we get more feedback.

Gallery Changes - by caedes 08/21/10 8:52 PM GMT

We made a few changes with the galleries today. The "Permanent" galleries and "New Images" galleries are now more separated in the left-hand navigation column. You can now view the "root" of the galleries (click on "Main Galleries" to see every image in every gallery all at once. When navigating around to different images, the gallery list stays expanded to the gallery that you last viewed.

The "New Images" gallery now displays all images that have been uploaded in the past 30 days. If an image is promoted to the permanent galleries before it is older than 30 days, it will appear in both galleries for a while.

Let me know if you find any problems with the new organization of the galleries.

It is with great sadness that I reflect on the passing of a long-time caedes.net member and friend to many of us, Verena. It was just a few days ago that she had sent me a kind message offering her support and encouragement for the new Artist Council; of which she was a member. I think that the outpouring of heartfelt reflection being offered to her and her family in this discussion is a testament to the impact that she has had on this community. I propose that any new artworks being created in her memory be submitted to the Your Community->Verenabloo gallery as a community memorial to her.

Wow!!! I was doing a little calculating of permanent images and I was pleasantly surprised with the total I came up with ... nearly 14,000 images that have been created and uploaded by our members have found a home in our permanent galleries! That is really a lot of original high quality images! Back when I first found caedes.net there was only @ 1600 images in total on the whole site. I am sure Geri never imagined back in 2000 that the wee little site he had just started so he could share his favorite desktop wallpapers would grow to such an extent.

To the participants, I am pleased to say that the "Curves" contest turned out to be the most successful contest that has run on the site. A big thank you to all members that took their considered time in interpreting the concept/theme and submitted some wonderful imagery that will now reside in the site's contest archives. Caedes.net server gets a holiday - by caedes 06/02/08 5:41 PM GMT

Over the weekend, there was an explosion at the datacenter where caedes is hosted (The Planet). It knocked out all the power to the building and a couple of walls, but none of the computers were damaged (other than having their power uncerimoniously disconnected). Total downtime was a bit over 24 hours.

A week or so ago I quietly updated the site to allow members to upload images of (almost) any aspect ratio. This means that you can now upload your widescreen desktop wallpaper as well as non-wallpaper 'artistic' images. I think that this change is very important to the site because wide format displays are becoming increasingly common. Also, it was not good for the site when our many very talented artists had to go elsewhere to share images that were not in desktop format. The current system will accept any images between 600px and 3000px on a side.

There were many parts of the site that needed to be changed in order to work with non-wallpaper shaped images. This included the main image information pages, all galleries, the voting booth, and the search engine. This is also why the image drop shadows have been removed and replaced with a thin grey border. The shadows may return once I figure out a good way to generate them. The change also called for the purchase of a new server dedicated to serving images. This is because the new system generates images on the fly (and caches them) once they are requested for the first time. This allows us to save disk space on the main server because it only needs to keep the originally uploaded image file (not the smaller image sizes). ...

You might remember that a while ago we started the new 'random' voting system and predicted that it would take quite a while before all the existing images on the site were able to get enough votes. Well we've finally reached nearly 100%! This means that your images which previously were stopped at around 6 votes will slowly gain more votes as time goes on. The mode is currently at 8 votes per image according to the stats page. As each image gets more votes it will further refine the c-index and further marginalize those votes which are 'questionable.'

New 'Archive' Function Introduced - by caedes 12/10/05 4:56 PM GMT

I've added a new function which will allow the the Senate members to 'archive' old images instead of deleting them. Archived images will still appear in your author gallery and your control panel, they just won't be in the main galleries. Only images which violate the Code of Conduct will be deleted. At the end of the first month that an image is on the website we will make a decision to either promote the image to the permanent galleries or to archive it. I think that you'll agree that archiving is preferable to flat out deleting images, and I think this will avoid much of the consternation surounding our previous policy of deleting old images.

After approximately 3 hours and 1000 clicks I've managed to upload the calendar images to CafePress and they are now available for ordering. I've prepared a special Caedes.net Store where you can view all the calendars at once. I finally chose to use CafePress after getting the quality print example from them and after comparing the shipping prices with other services. These are by far the best shipping prices I've seen ($4 for the first calendar plus $1 for each additional calendar). They also state that you can get your calendars before Christmas (with the cheapest shipping method) if you order by Dec.8. I'll also be giving out a month of Cadre membership per calendar purchased. Just send me a PM after you make the purchase and include the name of the person who made the order (so I can verify it).

Adobe was kind enough to supply DigitalFX with additional photoshop products to reward the strong efforts of our younger set. The rewards are based on several things...first is the quality the candidates submissions to Caedes, second is their willingness to help others and to make comments...general participation in our community. Third...do they have/can they afford the high cost of professional tools. The idea is to get the tools into the hands of deserving young people who will take the time to learn them well and use them effectively. I've very please to announce that Digital_Angel is the winner of a fresh copy of Photoshop CS2. Her work exhibits a broad range of visual talent, sensitivity and creative ability. She works with the freeware GIMP which is an outstanding product, but it's not Photoshop. She is 16 and and a sophmore in highschool. She wants to go to college to study digital graphic arts. Her talent runs from exceptional documentary and scenic digital photography to sophisticated artistic manipulation. Normally when someone says "leadership restructuring" it means that everyone is getting fired, but fortunately that is not the case. I've decided to redesign the caedes.net leadership structure in the style of the Roman Senate. The main difference other than name change is the creation of a new group 'Aediles' just below the ImageMods (now known as 'Praetors'). This new group will be a way to acknowledge the contributions of our long-term members when we don't need to have any extra ImageMods around. I'm glad that we have had so much discussion and new ideas on ways that the voting system and c-index *shudder* can be improved. As you may have heard, I have been working on a new system which I believe will fix most of the problems with the current one. The core idea behind this new system is that members will be asked to vote on specific (randomly chosen) images when they visit the site. The vote request will show up in your "Jobs" control panel when you are logged in. You will not know who the image is by and you will have to view the full size version before voting. I've removed all printing of the c-index and image ratings number until further notice. I think that people have become too enamored by this little number and it is failing to serve its intended purpose. For now, the ratings on images will be used only by the moderators in finding images to add to the permanent galleries. I think that we need to concentrate the focus on putting constructive comments where they need to go instead.

It is about time for us to make a major upgrade to the server that runs caedes.net. I've had my eye on a Dual Xeon machine for some time and I think the site is finally at the point where the resources can be put to use. The server has twice the resources (CPU, RAM, disk, bandwidth) as the current machine and (not suprisingly) costs twice as much. If I decide to do the upgrade next month then you can expect to see the site speed improve around the September 20th.

I want you to create a wallpaper featuring one or more frogs which you have drawn. Any style is acceptable as long as no photography is used. I've just made a few changes to the rating system which will change many of the c-indexes on the site, so I'm going to head off any questions about the changes made. There has been a problem with some images recording more downloads than views. This was screwing up the c-index since it depended on the ratio of these two values. As a quick fix to this problem I've changed the c-index so that it will be equal to the rating (average of the votes). Hopefully this will be a temporary fix. I have also changed the ordering of the author list in order to give more credit for authors with images in the permanent galleries.

As I look through the galleries here, I am always impressed with the quality of the non-wallpaper art that is uploaded every day. As many of you know, I have been planning to enable sharing of images that are not wallpaper shaped, and I'm really looking forward to seeing more 'tall' photos and art pieces of various aspect ratios. Once the software is finished however, we will need to think about how we want to integrate this new type of content with the existing wallpapers on the site. Since many people only come here to see desktop wallpaper, we probably shouldn't force them to view the art pieces that won't fit on their screen. On the other hand, we want all the visitors to know that the site offers more than just wallpapers. My current thoughts range from allowing visitors to choose 'wallpaper' or 'not wallpaper' from a dropdown menu to having a more separated site at http://photo.caedes.net/ or http://art.caedes.net/. What would you like to see?

Thanks to general linkage from our friends at fazed.net and digg.com the site has been a bit slow this weekend. Piner noted that we at one time had nearly 500 simultaneous users on the site. Maybe this will provide sufficient impetus for me to look into getting that new server. =)

You probably noticed that the front page has changed a bit. I finally got around to adding thumbnails for the top new images (TNI). Now I don't want to hear any more complaining about how being a TNI ruins your c-index! =) The TNI are now selected randomly from the top 10% of images (by c-index) from between 3 and 9 days ago (in order for them to get enough votes). They also have to have a minimum of 5 votes. I've also updated the main logo (upper left corner) and placed a cap on the karma which is displayed on your profile. Anything above 1000 karma now shows as "massive." Comments?

I took some time this weekend to rewrite the wallpaper search engine. It now ranks images by c-index, has a slightly cleaner output, shows a maximum of 100 images (up from 50), and implements a full reverse-keyword index for the search database. The database of searchable images will be updated at least once a day.

It has been (wisely) brought to my attention that the policy change concerning "snapshot" images needs to be clarified. The purpose of the policy change is to make members a little more selective about the images that they upload. For that reason I have decided to only discourage members from uploading snapshots. We will not be rejecting them when they are initially uploaded. In the future we will probably slightly change the procedure so that snapshots are tagged as such when they are uploaded and then will be automatically deleted after two weeks. I hope that this compromise will avoid as many violent uprisings as possible. =)

In order to get the caedes.net calendar out in time for the holiday season and New Years I'm going to need to accelerate the selection of images used for the calendar. I will choose 12 images. They will be in four distinct catagories (the four seasons). So I'm particularly interested in photos which are typical for either Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter. If you would like one of your images used in the calendar then please post in this discussion a list of images that I can choose from. Please use the image's filename instead of it's title. So that the calendar will be as inexpensive as possible (less than $19) it will be sold at no profit to the website. Please keep in mind the resolution of the photos that you submit. You will need to have a version of the photo that is at least 1600x1200 pixels for good print quality.

Code of Conduct Additions - by caedes 07/15/04 11:43 PM GMT

I have made a few small changes to the Code of Conduct to clarify some issues. The main point is that it is against the rules for anyone to actively use more than one username on the site, and it is VERY against the rules to use mutiple usernames to unfairly cast mutiple votes on images. I can very easily produce a list of all users which use mutiple usernames, cheat on voting, and cheat on favorites lists. The Mods and I have been discussing this and agree that we can not tolerate this behavior any more. If you think that you may be one of the users that I am referring to, just stop the activity and there won't be any repercussions for you.

Lions and Tigers and Downtime, Oh My! - by caedes 07/04/04 3:29 PM GMT

I'm sorry about the downtime on Saturday night and Sunday morning. I had to do a kernel upgrade and somehow /dev/null got turned into a normal file (Linux users should recognize this as a Bad Thing® ). This caused everything to crash when I rebooted the server. I would have fixed it last night when the datacenter put the KVM switch on the server, but I was too tired. SO I went home, slept for about 5 hours, and then came back. Once I got back on the server it only took about 3 hours to find the problem. I'm just happy that I avoided having to re-install the whole server. =)

As you may know, I've organized a group of friends in order to rent a dedicated server for our websites. We share the cost of the server, and therefore get more diskspace/bandwidth/cpu resources for a cheaper price than if we bought the same services from a company. The Alliance has recently had a few members leave and so we have a few membership spots open. The ideal number of members for us is around 20, and we currently have 14 members. So there are around 6 spots open. With 20 members, the dues each month would be less than $7. For that $7 you would get more than 2 Gigs of disk space and around 20 Gigs of bandwidth a month. In light of the server down time today (caused by excessive server load) I've decided to bite the bullet and purchase a new server. It is a Pentium 4 2GHz. machine and it will be dedicated to serving up caedes.net pages. I'll be soon moving the site over (after the operating system software is configured properly) and then after the site has been running smoothly for a week or so I'll upgrade the caedes.net software.

Caedes.net needs a webhost - by caedes 12/13/03 1:33 AM GMT

The website needs a permanent webhost. We were originally running the site on a webserver paid for by the Websensei Hosting Alliance, however we outgrew that server. We have since been running the site on a donated server, however we need to find a permanent home. I have been looking at servers offered by dedicated webhosting services, but the $150 or so that the site currently brings in each month can't pay for the server that we need. So there are two options:

1. Move back to the WHA server and simultaneously restrict site access to logged-in members (to mitigate the server load).
2. Find a webhost that is willing to donate or discount a server and/or colocation services in exchange for a "sponsored by" link on the site.

Obviously I would prefer to do the second option, but I don't have the time to campaign around to a webhost. Do any members know of a webhost that would be interested in such a sponsorship deal?

I know that none of the images are showing up right now. I didn't copy them over because of the diskspace needs. You're still welcome to upload any images to the site though. I've uploaded the poster design to the print shop and it should be available very shortly. I also have a proof version that you can look at to make sure that all the names go with the right images. Here are the two versions: [18x24] [20x30]. Note that I made the proof versions in grayscale at 8 colors so the files wouldn't be 30 megs each.

I'm still not quite sure of what prices to set for the prints. The base prices are as follows:16x24:$12.80, 18x24:$13.23,20x30:$14.00. Caedes.net will make %75 of anything that we charge over this amount. What do think a reasonable price would be?

I swear after this the poster will be finished. I'm going to make a version of the poster that has a border of images outside of the main photomosaic. The images will be about 2x larger than the ones in the mosaic. There is only room for about 50 of these images, so I'm going to take the images in the order that they show up in the Author Gallery. So what I need you to do is to choose the image that you want to be in this list. Just go into your edit profile page and at the bottom there is a select box for this image.

I've managed to port the site's software to use mod_perl instead of the normal CGI interface. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about read: will make website much faster. =) I'm going to need some people to wander over to the dev site and do a little debugging for me. With a bit of luck we can have a faster website as early as this weekend. =D

PS: You probably won't actually see much of a speed increase since the www.caedes.net is on the same server and is slowing everything down, however when the main site is upgraded it should be a big improvement.

Currently caedes.net is hosted on a dedicated server which costs $100 per month to lease. I only have to pay $5 of that because the server is shared by the other members of the Websensei Hosting Alliance. This is really cool, however there is going to be a time when caedes.net needs to have a server all to itself, and we'll have to find a way to raise the $100 each month.

UPDATE: I've uploaded release candidate #2 for your ridicule. Cookies for anyone who finds an error other than the 'Author gallery thumbnail alt text is screwy' and the 'cookie variables for gallery sorting are uninitiallized' bugs. =) I also need to know what to change 'goodness' to! Thanks a bunch.

The developement website for caedes.net is now online and you can help in debugging it for us. Just go to http://dev.caedes.net/, and use the site as you normally would. I copied over the users database, so you should be able to log in without making a new account as long as you haven't changed your password recently. One think to note is that the site will log you out whenever you switch between the dev site and the 'real' site. Let's see how many bugs we can find in a week and then I'll upgrade the real site.

Our second contest is going to be split into two parts: pure photography and digital art.

Photography Get the best photo you can of moving water using a long shutter speed. I think you know the effect I'm looking for, where the water is all blrred out in the direction of flow. This doesn't nessesarily need to be a nature shot.

Digital Art The topic is "moving water." You can use photos, but they should be enhanced in some way.

The two parts of the contest will be judged separately, and you'll get three weeks to do it since this might require some work. Be sure to put you images in the correct 'contest' sub gallery when you upload them. The deadline is July 8th. Prizes will be announced at a later date.

I hereby apoint the ImageMods with the distinct honor and priviledge of moving usergallery images into the main galleries. However with this great power also comes great responsibility: only images at 1280x1024 resolution or better, with a minimum of photo grain, and a maximum of artistic talent shall be moved. Please try to start with the oldest images first and don't move an image untill it gets on the 3rd page of the user gallery.

Details: Ok, what you do is you go to the gallery that the image(s) is(are) that you want to move and then click on the little box next to the name. (I can't remember if the box is there or not for you so I'll check that out). Then you click on the button "move" at the bottom of the page (not the delete button!!!) Please try to resist the urge to move your own work. =)

I'm not sure if I like the way I'm currently going about deciding which images to remove to save space. Right now I'm going by the pints onlined here, however I think everyone will agree that there is too much room for personal preference to get in the way. The problem is that there is basically no way to assign an unbiased 'quality number' to an artwork. I don't like being in the position of deciding what is and what isn't art. Are there any good ideas of how we can automate the process of cleaning out the image galleries?

I am feeling a little aimless right now in regards to the site's direction. I don't really see the point in expanding the site as a desktop wallpaper resource because other larger community sites like Deviant Art already do that so well. Also if the site gets much more popular I'm going to run out of bandwidth (it uses about 80 gigs a month right now).

I was thinking about narrowing the scope to only include photographic desktop wallpaper since that's what I'm getting in the user gallery anyway.

I'm also thinking of eventually moving the site to wallpapers.websensei.com in a merger with websensei.com because I'd like to use this domain for other things.

Another problem I'm having is that I need to start getting ready to work really hard in grad school and I won't have time to spend on the site, so if anyone is interested in taking over control I'll certainly entertain your ideas. :-)

So, what do ya'll think about the future of the site?

I am very sorry about having to close caedes.net for the last few days. We have been getting so many hits recently that we were very close to exceeding our (already very high) bandwidth limit. In order to make sure that more people are able to enjoy the site I've decided to go back to the original way that caedes.net operated.
